The splash of water washed down the drying acrylic palm prints on the window shades and created an illusion of rainforest during the monsoon season, my once favorite moment of the year. Surround myself with paintings of rainforest, I transformed the studio into a domain where my imagination went much further than the space and time that encapsulated my physical self. All memories of those special moments in Malaysia poured into the tiny studio of mine. One that stood up among all was the fading memory of a particular prose that I read in my Chinese textbook back in grade five. it was a story about the writer’s experience walking into a rubber estates during the dry season …
During the dry season, rubber trees shed their leaves turning the estate into a desolated ground. Walking on the leaves and twigs one could hear the crispy crushing sound amidst the silence void … although the details of the writing had faded away beyond recall, my vivid memory of the writer’s sentimental journey through the rubber estate has somehow always intrigued my longing for a home over the other side of the Earth… a land of no return.
