The splash of water washed down the drying acrylic palm prints on the window shades and created an illusion of rainforest during the monsoon season, my once favorite moment of the year. Surround myself with paintings of rainforest, I transformed the studio into a domain where my imagination went much further than the space and time that encapsulated my physical self. All memories of those special moments in Malaysia poured into the tiny studio of mine. One that stood up among all was the fading memory of a particular prose that I read in my Chinese textbook back in grade five. it was a story about the writer’s experience walking into a rubber estates during the dry season …
During the dry season, rubber trees shed their leaves turning the estate into a desolated ground. Walking on the leaves and twigs one could hear the crispy crushing sound amidst the silence void … although the details of the writing had faded away beyond recall, my vivid memory of the writer’s sentimental journey through the rubber estate has somehow always intrigued my longing for a home over the other side of the Earth… a land of no return.

This piece of work is to showcase the different possibilities of presenting a simple material such as clay. A piece of clay work is usually presented to the audience only after it had gone through the final stage in glaze firing. However, I am more intrigued in the process and the different stages a piece of clay went through, i.e. the effect of different temperatures in transforming a piece of clay from its original highly moldable body to the eventual unchangeable form. The stages are indicated as follow:
a = the first stage (green ware),
b = the second stage (bisque),
c = the third stage (after high fire/glaze fire)

定位于另一个不同的思维空间: 一零年夏北京七周 To Occupy a Different Space of Mind - Seven Weeks in Beijing 2010 Summer

September 2010

This is a collaborative installation that was made possible with the help from the seven young artists that I met at CAFA (the Central Academy of Fine Arts) Beijing in the summer of 2010. Through bringing together the artworks of different artists, the installation expressed not only the visual interactions between the works, It also documented my encounters with the young artists. The walls was turned into a ground of recollection where I wrote down the memory of my interactions with the artists. The exercise had opened a gateway for me to return to a recent time and  ponder upon a familiar yet distant relationship that I have with China and her culture.  The installation is also an extension of my dissertation research on the topic of “To Occupy a Different Space of Mind: Investigating the connectivity between socio-cultural and historical contexts and the positioning of self in the studio art practice of the Post Eighty Generation Artists in Beijing“.
